How it works
mSpot is a music service that allows users to store their music online and listen to it anywhere, including on their mobile devices. The service utilizes several software components to mobilize a customer's music.
It's really simple: you initially download the mSpot Uploader, which takes your music from your PC/Mac and uploads it to mSpot.com. Once the music is available on mSpot.com, you can then access and playback your content from a desktop browser or select mobile devices.
The service is FREE for up to 5 GBs (about 4,000 songs) of storage. Users can upgrade to 40 GBs (32,000) of storage PLUS access on up to 5 mobile devices for $3.99/month
What if I upgrade but then want to cancel?
No problem, you can cancel at any time. You will retain the purchased storage amount through the remainder of the monthly billing period, then at the end your storage will automatically be set back to the free storage limit.
Do you support international upgrades?
Yes, international customers can now upgrade through PayPal. To use PayPal for an upgrade you must have a credit card activated within your PayPal account. At this time direct credit card purchases are not available outside the US.
How much FREE storage do I get?
Currently users can get 5GBs of FREE storage, to store roughly 4000 songs.
What are the mSpot system requirements?
For Windows: Windows XP Home Edition or higher. You will need to have the latest priority updates from Microsoft.
For Mac: Mac OS 10.5 or higher.
What browsers does mSpot support?
mSpot.com requires Adobe Flash Player (version 10.0.12.36 and higher), and works with the following Internet browsers:
- Google Chrome (version 3.0 and higher)
- Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 7.0 and higher)
- Mozilla Firefox (version 3.6.3)
- Safari (version 4.0.1 and higher)
We recommend using Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome on the PC, and Google Chrome or Safari on the Mac.
What music management software does mSpot support?
mSpot currently supports both iTunes and Windows Media Player.
What types of music files does mSpot support?
mSpot uploads a wide range of DRM-free formats, including MP3, MP4, AAC, AAC+ and WMA. mSpot will not upload Digital Rights Management (DRM)-protected formats, such as M4P.
Managing Your Music
How long will it take to upload my music collection?
It depends on your network connection, but on average you should see 2-3 songs uploaded per minute. For the initial upload we recommend leaving your computer on overnight to complete the process.
Can I upload music to the cloud from more than one computer?
No, the service only allows one music collection from one user to be uploaded to mSpot.com and played on your device.
Why are some songs in a black font and some in a gray font?
Black font songs represent music that has been uploaded to the cloud on mSpot.com. Gray font songs represent music that is in your home music collection but has not been uploaded to the cloud on mSpot.com.
How do I add more music later on?
- Go to the mSpot Uploader Preferences by right clicking the mSpot icon in the System Tray and clicking Preferences.
- Go to the Music Library Tab
- Click Manually Select Your Music and Add Folders
- Go to Settings and Click Sync Music Now
What's the best way to manage music uploading?
Many people with larger music collections will want to upload only a portion of their collection. Here's the best way to do that:
- Set up your All Songs Library, which is a directory of your whole PC library.
In the PC/Mac Uploader, in the Music Libraries tab, select the source of your music. If you use iTunes, check that. If you store all your music in a folder like c:\music, select that. Whatever library you select will be your "All Songs" library.
- Set up your mSpot Songs Library, which is the subset of your PC library you want to upload.
In the Web Player, select the pulldown next to "All Songs" and choose "Upload Editor." Here you can edit your upload list by unchecking artists or playlist you do NOT want to upload. This edited library is your "mSpot Songs" library, and is what will be uploaded to the cloud.
How can I upload only certain artists or playlists?
From the web player select the pulldown next to "All Songs" and select "Upload Editor." Uncheck any artists or playlists you do NOT want uploaded. If any artist/playlist has already been uploaded, unchecking that item in the Upload Editor will "Unload" it.
How do I upload podcasts?
From the web player select the pulldown next to "All Songs" and select "Upload Editor." Then select the "Include Podcasts" checkbox. Any podcasts you have in your All Songs library will be uploaded. (Note: This will only work if you use iTunes as your Music Library Location since we read the "podcast" tag that way).
How can I improve the sound quality?
You can choose different audio quality settings in the Upload Editor. From the web player select the pulldown next to "All Songs" and select "Upload Editor." The Audio Settings are defaulted to the "Good" setting, and to improve you can select either "Better" or "Best". (Note that better audio quality also means larger files and fewer songs per GB of storage).
Radio Spotter™ (Beta)
What devices support the Radio Spotter feature?
Currently this feature is only accessible on Android powered devices. iOS support will be available soon.
Can I use the Radio Spotter feature outside the US?
Due to licensing restrictions this feature is only available within the US. We plan to progressively expand our international coverage.
Using the Mobile app
What mobile devices are supported by mSpot?
Currently mSpot supports the following mobile devices:
- Android phones and tablets, Version 2.0 and higher.
- iPhone and iPod touch 3g, 3gs and 4; on Version 3.0 and higher.
- If your device is not supported yet, please click here so we can email you when we are able to support it.
How do I download the mobile application?
From your device, go to the Android Market or Apple App Store and search for mSpot Music.
How do I get music into the mSpot cloud and enable playback on my wireless device?
- Go to www.mspot.com from your PC/MAC.
- Download the mSpot Uploader and register for the service via the PC/Mac.
- Select music to upload. As your selected music is uploaded to the cloud, it is automatically accessible from any supported mobile device or on any PC/Mac through a web browser.
- To play on an Android or Apple mobile device, get the mSpot Music app from the Android Market or Apple App Store.
Can I use mSpot on an airplane or other areas where I don't have network coverage?
Yes. The application has an "airplane mode" setting which allows you to listen to content that has already been downloaded to your mobile device from the cloud.
What if I don't want to store any songs on my phone?
If you want to play songs on the mobile app but NOT have the songs stored on your phone, go to Settings and select the "Streaming Only" option. If you select this option you will not be able to play songs on an airplane or anywhere else where there is no Wifi or cellular coverage.
What if I want to download a lot of music at once to my phone?
- Android: Use Download Now from the phone app. Just long-press on any artist, album, playlist or song and select "Download Now" and the music will download wirelessly. In the Settings menu you can also control if you want the downloads to occur only when in Wifi (to save on data plans) or both in Wifi and cellular coverage.
- Apple: The Download Now feature is coming soon. In the meantime, if you set the Streaming Only option to Off then every song you play will be downloaded to the device.
Can I play back non-mSpot music through the phone app?
- Android: Yes, any non-DRM files on your SD card will show up in the mSpot phone player and can be played.
- Apple: This feature will be added soon to devices with Version 4.0 or higher.
Does my computer need to be connected to play music on my wireless device?
No. Your computer does not need to be connected to listen to music on your device. However, when your computer is not connected, you only have access to music that has been stored in the cloud on mSpot.com.
Troubleshooting
My music stopped uploading.. why?
It could be because you have reached your free storage limit. You can check this on the web player by looking in the lower left-hand corner. If this is the case, you can purchase more storage to upload more music. If that's not the issue, try exiting and re-starting the Uploader.
What's the best way to remove some songs from the cloud?
For a few songs: In the web player, select the dropdown next to a song, artist or album and choose "Unload" if you want to remove from the cloud now but may want to add back later, or "Delete" to remove entirely from the mSpot library.
For a lot of songs: From the web player select the pulldown next to "All Songs" and select "Upload Editor." Uncheck any artists or playlists you want to remove from the cloud. The songs will be tagged as "Unloaded".
What are some basic troubleshooting techniques for uploading issues?
- If you don't see all the songs in your web browser that you think has been uploaded, refresh your web browser.
- If that doesn't work or you are having trouble uploading your music, restart your Music Uploader.
-
- For the PC, quit the mSpot Uploader by clicking on the mSpot icon in your system tray and selecting 'Exit'. To restart, choose the mSpot Uploader from your Start menu.
- For the Mac, quit the mSpot uploader by right-clicking the mSpot icon in your system tray and selecting 'Quit'. (You can also do this by finding mSpot in the Activity monitor and selecting "quit process".) Open up your Applications folder and double click the mSpot Application icon to launch the uploader.
- If you continue to see many songs missing or have a significant mismatch between the number of songs you have uploaded and the number of songs you see in the web player, you will need to "reset" your catalog. WARNING: This will delete your entire library from the cloud and will require a new upload of songs.
-
- Go to the Music Uploader and uncheck/remove all folders/directories.
- Go to the website player and refresh the page.
- All music should be gone.
- Go back into the Music Uploader and select the music to upload.
- The music will begin uploading.
