Plies (a.k.a. Algernod Lanier Washington) is a Southern gangsta rapper from Fort Meyers, Florida, with a gutter-thug attitude whose hard-hitting (often R&B-esque) club-rap beats make his music popular on mainstream hip-hop playlists. He signed with the Atlantic-distributed Slip-N-Slide Records in 2004, and, after some legal trouble, finally released his debut album,
The Real Testament, in 2007. The success of the album's hit singles, "Hypnotized" and the platinum-selling "Shawty," launched Plies into the mainstream music scene. A year later, in June 2008, he released his sophomore album,
Definition of Real. It debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200, supported by the R&B-influenced track, "Bust It Baby, Pt. 2." Plies wasted no time, just six months he dropped his third album,
Da REAList, which includes the hit urban-radio singles "Want It, Need It" and "Put It On Ya."
